It is an article of faith for the Bible that the poor among us have, by virtue of their poverty, the power to evangelize us. Walter Burghardt S.J. of Georgetown explains how the poor challenge the churches by their overwhelming numbers, by the ever-worsening misery, by their endurance under domination, by their simplicity and solidarity and by the openness to God and what God permits. The poor evangelize in that they compel us to look within ourselves in order to stimulate a profound conversion.
